My husband, Tristan, and I recently took a little weekend trip down to Oceanside, CA to visit his cousin and her family. We enjoyed yummy home cooked meals and chasing the kids in the backyard. For this short getaway I partnered with TravelCross luggage to share some tips on packing light in a small carry-on suitcase. I will admit packing light is not always my forte. I am known to bring several overflowing bags to make sure I have enough options ( a girl’s gotta have shoe options, am I right?!). But this time, I really challenged myself to pack light – it was my first time meeting Tristan’s cousin and I didn’t want her to think we were moving in! 🙂 One of the best tips for packing light is to stick to neutral colors and minimal patterns. Try to bring denim or black pants that can go with almost any top, a neutral jacket and accessories, and add a pop of color or pattern with a dress or one top. This way, everything in your suitcase will go together and getting dressed will be a breeze! Another trick for packing light (and just staying more organized on any kind of trip) is using packing cubes. You can divide your clothes according to their category, that way when you need a top, you know right where to look! TravelCross also offers packing cubes here in several colors.
So here is my carry-on packing list:
- Close toed shoe – sneaker, loafer, or mule – brown or black
- Dressier sandals – could have a heel, I didn’t need a heel for this trip – metallic or black
- Casual flip flops
- Small cross body bag (and maybe a tote for the car ride, you know, for all your snacks 🙂 ) Black, brown, or cream
- Straw sun hat
- 2 Short sleeved shirts – one solid, one pattern
- 1 light sweater – light grey, cream, or black
- 1 pair jeans – denim or black
- 1 pair shorts- denim or neutral color
- 1 skirt or dress – color or pattern
- 1 jacket – denim, leather, or military
- 1-2 swimsuits
- PJ’s or lounge outfit
This carry-on size suitcase was just the right size for everything I needed including makeup and toiletries bags! It has straps to hold your clothes in place which I like and one side has a mesh zipper to contain things like socks, swimsuits and delicates. I love that this luggage has 4 wheels instead of 2 so it glides smoothly along with you. The hard shell design makes it extra durable and more stylish! I chose the Columbia Carry-On in this fun Champagne color because I thought it was unique and would make spotting my suitcase on baggage claim even easier! Shop TravelCross luggage here
